  • Tissue Expansion

Tissue expansion is a reconstructive technique that utilizes expansion of nearby tissue to re-surface or reconstruct a problematic area. Tissue expansion is commonly used on the scalp, breast and trunk. To learn more about breast reconstruction, see Dr. Brown’s breast reconstruction page. Non-breast tissue expansion is most commonly used in children when treating scars and congenital nevi.

A tissue expander is placed under the health tissue that we want to expand. After the incision heals, fluid is added to the tissue expander in the clinic on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The tissue is expanded until there is enough tissue to reconstruct the problematic area after excision.
