  • Lymphedema Surgery

Lymphedema is a debilitating problem. In the United States, lymphedema is most commonly caused by surgical lymph node removal and radiation. Therefore, lymphedema most commonly affects cancer patients.

Treatment of lymphedema ranges from physiologic treatments to excisional procedures.

If diagnosed early enough, physiologic treatments may be a solution. These treatments include:

    • Vascularized lymph node transfers
    • Lymphovenous bypass (LV bypass)

Excisional treatments are more appropriate for patients whose disease has progressed beyond the point of reversal with physiologic treatments. Excisional treatments include:

    • Liposuction
    • Direct excision of the fibrotic tissue with closure
    • Direct excision of fibrotic tissue with skin grafting
